Friendly Kyorugi Competition Held in Muju, Korea as Highlight of World Youth Taekwondo Camp


A friendly kyorugi competition was held in Muju, Korea on Aug. 9, 2009, as a highlight of the inaugural World Youth Taekwondo Camp, drawing about 260 athletes and officials from 33 countries.
 
The Friendship Kyorugi Competition, which took place at the Banditbul Gymnasium, served as a rehearsal for the taekwondo competition at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. A total of 100 athletes are to compete in the taekwondo tournament at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
 
“The friendly competition is partly intended to give the camp participants an opportunity to adapt themselves in advance to the taekwondo competition at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games,” said WTF President Chungwon Choue.
 
The competition featured five weight categories for each male and female division, just as at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. The weight categories for the male division are -48kg, -55kg, -63kg, -73kg and +73kg, while those for the female division are -44kg, -49, -55kg, -63kg and +63kg.
 
The camp participants received two days of intensive training on kyorugi and poomsae from Korean taekwondo masters. Among the students were two athletes with a disability. They were Mr. Gersson Josue Mejia Alvarez from Guatemala and Iran’s Mehdi Pour Rannama, both of them participated in the 1st WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan on June 10, 2009.
 
In the female division, Korea and China clinched two gold medals each and Thailand won one gold medal. In the male category, Korea, Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, Greece and Jordan won one gold medal each, showing an even level of taekwondo techniques.
 
Prior to the final matches, there was an opening ceremony of the Friendship Kyorugi Competition. A special event was held during the ceremony: to break wooden blocks on which participants’ bad habits were written.
